I love watching old Sesame Street episodes (VERY old - the first five years especially). We have both volumes of the Sesame Street Old School DVDs. Surprisingly, Big Brother really enjoys watching them too. I say surprisingly because they’re very dated and not exactly geared toward today’s kids – in fact, there’s even a disclaimer at the beginning of each DVD that says these episodes may not be appropriate for “today’s preschoolers.” (I think they’re just fine, though kids may not be interested in them.)
I thought I’d share my very favorite Sesame Street clip – featuring two girls, two dolls, a dollhouse, and two kittens. I believe it’s from the first season. When we had our “cousin party” right after I got the first set of DVDs, we watched some of it (because my cousin’s wife was in a clip one time – she was hoping it was on the DVDs). Interestingly enough, my cousin – who is male and five years older than me – exclaimed “This is my favorite one!” when this clip came on. I was amused by that, to say the least! (But he has good taste!)
Anybody else have a favorite classic Sesame Street segment? What other shows from your childhood do you like to watch?
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Jessica (whose blog is called Life Is RANTastic!) did a post about the Old School Sesame Street DVDs coming with disclaimers. Here is the link to the post if you are interested:

I can’t recall any specific Sesame Street segments from my childhood, although I did enjoy Bert and Ernie, Big Bird, Snuff, Grover, Oscar the Grouch, The Cookie Monster, etc. As a teen, my mother used to babysit two of my nieces and they watched Sesame Street on a regular basis. One skit that I remember was about the letter “L” where some of the Muppets sang a song called “Rebel L” to the tune of the Billy Idol song “Rebel Yell”.
As for shows from my childhood, I will occas. watch “The Monkees” or “Lancelot Link” DVDs.
Oh Book, I surely do remember that one – and I can’t believe – after not hearing it for years – that I could sing right along with it. I think it, too, was one of my favorites – along with “Ten tiny turtles on the telephone talking to the grocery men” and “…..twelve ladybugs came to the ladybug’s picnic”! Shoot, don’t get me started – there are a lot of favorites I could put on my list from the Old School Sesame Street!!
SEVEN! PUMPKIN! PIES!
CRASH!!!
Definitely my favorite, since I can remember it after all these years.
The Lone Ranger!
‘I’m a little airplane’
Cheers
I looked up the other segments that some of you mentioned. What a trip! I also found the one about how crayons are made – I always loved that one. And Malcom, now I canNOT get “Rebel L” out of my head! Serves me right, I guess, because BB was complaining this afternoon that I kept getting the song for the “Two Littens in a Dollhouse” segment stuck in his head.
My favorite Sesame Street character has always been Snuffy. But when I was little myself, I used to race home from school to watch the most important hour of television EVER — Where the Action Is (an American Bandstand rip off) and Dark Shadows. I absolutely loved hanging around in Collinwood, getting the crap scared out of me over a cold glass of Hi-C.
Snuffy was/is great, but when I was a kid I almost couldn’t watch Sesame Street, because of the frustration I felt that no one would believe Big Bird that Snuffy was real and that no matter what they did, Snuffy always had to leave before the people got there.
I relived some of the frustration watching Sesame Street Old School. There’s a scene of Snuffy walking down a very busy Sesame Street. Mr Hooper is looking for his glasses and can’t see anything….Luis is carrying boxes and can’t see around them….etc….a whole street full of people and not one person can see a giant furry elephant walking down the street………. ARGH!!!!! O.k. I’m not over it.
