Tim and I resisted Netflix for a while. We borrowed DVDs (free) from the library for a long time. That worked well until the library instituted a $1/day late fee (we’re not great at, ahem, managing our library materials) and the DVDs were often so scratched that they were unwatchable. So, when I went back to work a couple of years ago, we decided to get Netflix.
I’m so glad we did – I love it! Tim and I don’t watch a ton of TV, but one thing I like to do is find a series I like and watch it all the way through in a series of marathons. The first one I watched was Friday Night Lights. I watched all four existing seasons in three weeks.
Tim has a knack for picking series that we like. After Friday Night Lights (which Tim didn’t watch), we moved on to Dead Like Me, then Pawn Stars, which was our “Sunday night laundry folding” show.
A few weeks ago, we started How I Met Your Mother. I’d never watched it before Tim suggested that we watch the first few episodes, and it has become one of my favorites. It reminds me a lot of Friends. I believe there are 150 episodes on Netflix, and lately I’ve been watching them at a rate of 5 per night while I do other things after the kids go to bed. Seriously, tonight I couldn’t wait for the kids to go to bed so I could turn the TV on.
Do you like Netflix? How do you watch? What’s your favorite TV series that you’ve caught up on via Netflix?

Sorry BookMama…I accidentally put my email as my name! Any way you can delete my comment so my email address isn’t public? I am reposting my comment below!
We are Netflix streaming fans too! That’s how my husband started watching Dexter (I don’t think that’s available via streaming anymore, though). I also have enjoyed watching past series of Bones. I know there is more we have watched, too. We are big HIMYM fans here as well–love NPH as Barney! “It’s going to be legen–wait for it–dary!”
Some of the documentaries are also pretty good–have you ever seen “Waiting for Superman”?
And of course we use it for our 2.5yo so she can watch Dora, Diego, and Super Why :-p
Oh yes, Netflix is great for the kids! We almost never watch “real time” TV of any sort now. (The last time I can remember watching what was actually on was during the Olympics last summer.) They kids have so many things they can watch, and they usually make decent choices. And maybe the best thing is – no commercials! I never have to hear them begging for the latest toy or other junk that they’ve seen on TV, because they just don’t see commercials. Ever.
Although I do think it’s a little weird that my 11YO is hooked on Monk. Thanks, Mom, for that one! I guess I don’t mind him watching it too much, though. Better than HIMYM, which he watched a handful of episodes of before we realized it. We nixed that right away, especially when we heard him say how cool Barney is.
Sorry Book that Adam got hooked on Monk. And I’m also sorry that I allowed him to watch HIMYM while he was down here. I have to be honest…..I have not seen one single episode of that series. Perhaps I should have watched it on his mini before I let him watch it. Or, I should have taken the mini away from him once I went to bed!!!
We got started with Netflix a few years ago, after TV went digital and we couldn’t get ANYTHING. With Netflix-by-mail, we get one disk at a time. We have the freedom to watch anything we want, but in small, individually-wrapped portions. If we had full-time TV, I doubt I’d still be practicing violin almost every day. It saves me from myself. : )
This is so funny because I just now (after all these years) discovered How I Met Your Mother and I love it. I think it’s Robin. When do we find out?
Snowbird, I don’t (much) mind him watching Monk. He’s also started watching Malcolm in the Middle (my fault). I think I don’t mind, and he loves it, but it was a little annoying this afternoon when all three kids were walking around the house singing “You’re not the boss of me … ” (From the show’s theme song.)
vlnvla, I don’t have too much of a problem with watching TV. I think that all those years (5) in college without regular access to TV trained me well. It’s the internet that gets me … LOL
