I got a new computer at work yesterday. I didn’t ask for a new one, and wasn’t experiencing problems with the old one, but apparently they were upgrading the rest of the people who had Windows 2000 (and I fell into that group).
Now, I’m always a little nervous when I get a new computer at work, or when the reinstall everything because of problems with the computer. Every time this has happened in the past, something has gone wrong – a specific program I needed wasn’t installed, files were missing, things like that. So I’m always leery.
But this time, no major issues – all my files were where I expected them to be, I had all the software I needed (including InDesign, which few people use, and thus it’s not part of the standard built). The IT guy was eventually even able to find the installation CD for my scanner. (IT took it after they installed the scanner when I got it several years ago, so I knew they had it somewhere.) The only actual problem is that the photo editing software that comes with OfficeXP is a completely different program than what came with Office 2000, so I have to learn that from scratch. (Of course, I have to edit photos daily, so this is slow going for now.)
So why do I feel stupid, you may ask? Everything is different. The appearance is different. The default settings are different. Options and other things are located in different places. Need to use the “bcc”field in an e-mail? I do, multiple times a day. Guess what, the default setting is to NOT show the bcc field – took me 5 minutes to figure out how to turn it on. Want to view a document in Word without having the funky multiple-pane display? Another 3 minutes to figure that one out. Used to using “autofill” for my content management system? 5 minutes to turn that on, plus the fact that I no longer had the “history” that it uses to autofill – gotta start from scratch. Same thing with my autocorrect – gotta enter all of those again as I remember them.
And on and on, all day long. I felt so out of whack at work today. I know I’ll be back in the groove before too long, but it just feels strange now.
Anybody else have an experience like this?
