Today at work we had our department “holiday” party. (Yes, it’s early, but this is the only time all the field human resources people are in the building. I don’t have a traditional HR role but our communication team does report to HR.) We had the usual food and socializing for about 45 minutes, then we started the activity. The activities at our meetings are always fun.
This year it was (Company Name) Jeopardy, with categories like Books, DVDs, Music, Company History, All About Us (the department), and Wild Card. We were divided into five teams by functional area – which meant I was with my direct co-workers, which is great because I like them all AND they’re smart – and the rules were changed somewhat to accomodate 80 people. Some of the questions – er, answers, since this was Jeopardy – were really hard! “These two people were vp of field human resources and vp of WB human resources when the company went public” – well, that was 12 years ago and those two people are LONG gone – but we got it right. There are some advantages to having several people on your team who have been with the company for more than 20 years. (OK, I’ll admit that I thought that “Ray Charles” was an absurd way for my team to answer “What blues singer crashed his Corvette the first time he drove it?” but whaddya know, it was right.)
My team won! I knew we would. 🙂 Seriously, as communicators, we’re collectors of information, plus we’ve collectively been with the company for a LONG time, and we’re strategic thinkers. We each get a $10 company gift card (an extra sweet deal when combined with the employee discount). I can’t wait to get mine.
Anybody else have team-building activities like this? Anybody else like them as much as I do?
