We learned yesterday that our favorite science museum, COSI in Toledo, is closing for good at the end of December due to lack of funding. We do not live in Toledo (we’re about 45 minutes north, in Michigan) but my cousin lives there and said there was a vote on the ballot in early November to continue a current levy … and it failed. (This was not for any new charges, simply a vote to continue current funding.) My cousin also noted that she and others in the family thought the wording on the ballot was very confusing and may have led some people to vote down the measure when they might actually have supported it, had they understood it.
We’re pretty sad about this. We have a membership to the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, and that gets us into COSI for free. In fact, Big Brother prefers COSI (as do Tim and I) – we’ve been there at least four times in the past year – and we were going to buy a membership there when our AAHM membership expires next month. Now, since we won’t be able to go to COSI, I may not even buy the AAHM membership.
The only thing that gives me a little bit of hope is that the Detroit Zoo was in a similar situation a couple of years ago – there was even a closing plan and schedule in place – and they were able to work it out at the last minute. (I don’t recall the details.)
Anybody else lose a favorite attraction like this?
