No, not my language. Though I do try not to swear much, and never around the kids.
I’m referring to our house. We have a standard-to-smallish house, about 1,300 square feet, along with all the stuff that a family of four tends to have. Clothes, toys, books (I know, I know – too many), furniture, etc.
Now, factor in that Tim and I both work full-time, and that’s a lot of stuff to maintain and put away not very much time. The house tends to get a little – OK, pretty – messy during the week.
But it always gets cleaned when we have company. Last week, when we were getting ready for my parents to arrive, I decided that THIS week we are going to keep it clean. Not spotless, but at least pretty close to what it was on Friday, when my parents were here.
Hmmmm, how to make that happen … I know! I instituted a rule that I had given the kids just a week or two earlier. Before bed, 10 minutes of picking up. Their rooms have stayed pretty clean this way, so I figured it would work for the rest of the house, too. Now, this is in addition to doing the dishes and things like that. But it means that we’re putting away whatever the kids got out during the morning or after dinner (or making THEM put it away), straightening the bathroom after bath night, disposing of or putting away any newspapers/school papers/mail as needed.
So far, it’s working pretty darn well! Tomorrow morning it will be one week since my parent were here. The house isn’t quite as clean as it was on Friday – we’d have to do some cleaning before they came, like vacuuming – but it wouldn’t take nearly as long to get the place in shape as it did last week.
We’ll see how long it lasts.
