Edited to add a concept drawing of the actual roundabout in our area.
We have a new traffic circle down the road.
A roundabout, to be exact.
I have mixed feelings about it.
On the one hand, I’m thrilled that the construction is complete. It caused a very annoying detour to the majority of the places we need to get to, including tripling my drive home from child care. (Ever had two cranky, fighting kids in the car after a long day at work? OK, maybe it quadrupled our drive home.)
On the other hand, I have no idea how to drive on a roundabout. Sure, if I’m getting off at the next “exit,” I just stay to the right. But what about if I need to go 3/4 of the way around? Which lane do I go in? Do I change lanes while I’m actually in the roundabout? Etc.
I know that I’ll have it down pat before too long, since I’ll be driving through it at least twice a day most days. But even once I know how to do it … what about all the other people who don’t go that way regularly and don’t know how to use a roundabout? Makes me a little nervous.
Anyone else have one of these new style roundabouts nearby? How long did it take you to get used to it?
