Because he had.
Poor Book Boy. When I picked him and Little Sister up from child care today, both were very happy. They had “arcade day” today, and both kids were clutching brown paper bags filled with goodies they had won as prizes at the various games.
As we walked back to get their papers, I said “Boy, you guys must have had a great day today!” BB hung his head and said “This is the worst day of my life.” I thought he was joking, because he always fakes us out like that. But then he looked at me, and I could see that he was near tears.
“Andrew’s moving to Minnesota. That’s why he hasn’t been here this week.”
We talked about it a little bit, and he managed to hold himself together until we got home, but I knew he was extremely upset. When we got home, Tim came out to the car. He asked BB how his day was – and BB just collapsed into tears. “Andrew’s moving!” he said.
It just broke my heart. I mean, I know that we can’t shield our children from disappointment, etc. But geez, to have his best friend move away. That’s hard. I was practically in tears myself because BB was so genuinely upset.
After dinner, we dug up Andrew’s number, and BB called him. They talked for a nice long while, and we actually arranged an all-day play date here next Thursday. It will most likely be the last time the boys see each other (unless Andrew comes back to visit family – I’m not sure if they have “roots” in the area) but it makes me happy to know that they’ll have a nice long day to play together.
