Living in the Detroit area, I hear a lot about the auto industry. Lately, with Michigan’s economy in the dumps and the auto industry declining, there are frequent letters to the editor (of the Detroit Free Press) urging readers to “buy American.”
I appreciate the sentiment, but what exactly does “American” mean?
Does it mean my 2003 Ford Focus, which was made in Mexico?
Does it mean the Mitsubishi R&D labs that are in the two buildings adjacent to my workplace?
Does it mean the Hyundai-Kia America Technical center that is about a mile away from my house, and is one of the biggest employers in my township?
I’m not exactly sure either.
