Well, old man winter has visited us with a vengeance! We’ve had about a foot of snow in the past week, and temperatures are hovering around -1 right now. Brrr!
But last night, we found the perfect way to take advantage of the weather. (It was not quite this cold – around 17 , and no wind). We spent the day visiting my brother and his wife (and btwinny was able to put in a brief appearance at lunchtime – she works retail, so it was nice that she could sneak away at all). Around 4:15, we all bundled up, including snow pants and boots for the kids, and headed over to the local zoo for their “Holiday Nights at the Zoo” event. It was beautiful! The zoo has primarily wooden walkways rather than paved paths, and they were pretty much snow-covered, which is where the boots and snow pants came in handy for the kids – they had a blast stomping through the snow and sliding around. They got to see Santa Claus, and there was a clown making elaborate balloon animals (Book Boy got a monkey on a palm tree!). Just when we were starting to get too cold. we got to the carousel building – rides were free all night (the kids really took advantage of that!), and they got to decorate cookies afterward.
All in all, it was a very fun and affordable couple of hours. And honestly, I don’t think it would have been nearly as fun if it hadn’t been cold and snowy! What a perfect way to enjoy the weather.
