I read the first book in the City of Ember series a few years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and was pleasantly surprised when the second book in the series, The People of Sparks, came out a year or so later. (Unlike the recent trend of young adult books that end as cliffhangers – with book #2 “to be published soon” – there was no indication that this was going to be a series.) The second book in the series, The People of Sparks, was just as enjoyable as the first. The third, The Prophet of Yonwood, was “prequel” and a bit of a disconnect and, in my opinion, could be skipped entirely without taking anything away from the rest of the series.
The fourth book, The Diamond of Darkhold, was published late last year and I read it over the past couple of days. Like the others, it was a quick read and I couldn’t wait to get back to it. (Though I could have done without the last couple of pages.)
