We have two cats at our house. We’ve had others, and they’ve all been 100% indoor cats – safer for them, easier for us.
Maddie, a small black and white cat, came from a shelter 12 years ago and has always been an indoor cat. Jenny, a timid long-haired girl, was a stray that we found one snowy Christmas Eve night 13 years ago. She was most definitely an outdoor cat, if not an outright stray (we did search for an owner, to no avail) and has always seemed to want to go outside more than any of our other cats have.
This year, I have a feeling that she may get her wish. She’s already escaped into the backyard at least twice, and it’s really hard to catch her – she either bolts for the back gate (which is broken and hangs slightly ajar) or hides out under the deck. And did I mention that she’s fully clawed, too? And those claws come out when you pick her up outside.
Anyway, the reason I think she may get her wish this year is that not only is she anxious to get outside, but Little Sister also loves to go outside, and she’s pretty careless about where Jenny is when she opens the door (and about closing the door behind herself). LS has been responsible for both of Jenny’s escapes this year. I’ve actually started locking the screen door behind LS when she goes outside – don’t worry, I’m always within hearing distance – so that she can’t open the door and let Jenny out.
But I know it’s going to happen again, and I know that I’m going to be the one retrieving her. Complete with scratch marks.
It could be a long summer!
