Spring is such a wonderful season. The warm weather is awesome, of course, and I just love all the plants. Our trees now have leaves on them, our Bartlett pear trees are loaded with white blossoms, the neighborhood is filled with tulips and daffodills. The two lilac bushes next to our deck are just about to explode in white and purple flowers. I can’t wait.
But my favorite spring color of all is the redbud tree. The bright, delicate purple blooms just “pop” against the other trees. I smile every time I see them. But … they’re only purple for about a week before the leaves turn green, so I have to make sure I don’t forget to look. We have a lot of treed land in our area, so there are plenty of trees, and they really do “pop.”
I’ve actually thought about planting a redbud in our yard, but I’ve had such bad luck with plants that there’s really no point. (In the 7.5 years since we moved here, I’ve planted five rose bushes and one forsythia, all of which died. We also had a tiny magnolia tree (planted a few months before we moved in) and two azalea bushes that all basically died at the roots – I gave them a little tug and the plants completely separated from the roots! (If there even were any roots at that point.)
What’s your favorite spring plant – the one that makes you smile every time you see it?
